LiveShare, A Free Messaging And Photo Sharing App, Paves Way To New Era of Colorful Conversation

Is it me or is Facebook getting a bit crowded…and creepy? With increasingly complex options for privacy settings and all these lists you need to keep track of, staying an active and vigilant Facebook user is getting to be too much work.

LiveShare, a free photo sharing and messaging app and service for mobile and web, may just have the solution. With LiveShare, you can message anyone with an email address or US phone number and share photos whether they use the app or not. Plus, since you’re in control of the messaging, you know exactly what and with whom you’re sharing. It can resemble Google+ if you start messaging large groups of people, but instead of streams or feeds, you are actually just creating an extensive group message.

LiveShare is also pretty neat in that the messages you send via Apple device or Android are automatically synced to the web version. So let’s say you have more photos you’d like to share later on, you could simply drag and drop them for a fast upload. The mobile version’s batch upload isn’t too bad itself, but just for the sake of argument, you can message from anywhere.  To top it off, if you share more than one photo, your photos arrange themselves into a cool collage.

Other neat features to check out include the ability to post highlights to Facebook (if you’re still bent on letting everyone in on your happenings), “breadcrumbs”—a map showing the places your friends have been (I must admit, I’m still wary of this feature, but at least not everyone and their mother can see where you’ve been), a multi-shot camera mode, and push notifications.

LiveShare is built by Cooliris, a Palo Alto startup that specializes in “social discovery for photos.” It was co-founded by Soujanya Bhumkar and Mayank Mehta. LiveShare was first released in January 2011, has since been released in Japan, and has received funding from Docomo, according to Tech In Asia.

Peter Shen: Sounds like a cool idea. I think it's a company to watch too. Looking forward to seeing how consumers embrace this service.
