New York Knicks' Fans Post Racist Comments On Jeremy Lin's Facebook Page

Everyone now knows Jeremy Lin is heading towards Houston after the New York Knicks declined to match Houston Rockets' 3 year $25 milllion offer after one of the more bizzare NBA free agent signings, where the Knicks have always said they would bring back Lin and even at one time declared that they would match up to a $1 billion to keep Jeremy Lin in New York.  But now that Jeremy is no longer in New York, the fall out has begun, and in a very ugly way.

On Tuesday night, Lin posted a status in his Facebook page declaring his excitement to be a Houston Rocket and his appreciation and love for New York Knicks fans.  But almost immediately, racist and derogatory comments were posted, mainly by  New York Knicks fans.

I am not going to write what they actually wrote but you can see it for yourself in the screen shot of Lin's Facebook status and the racist comments that followed.

I am not surprised by the racist comments and venom that are directed at Jeremy Lin.  This is a sad but another unfortunate chapter to Jeremy Lin's stardom, which overall, has been an amazing journey for Jeremy, his family, basketball fans, particulary the New York Knicks fans, and the Asian American community, which now feel they have someone to look up and cheer to in the NBA.  Examples of racism or at least cultural insensitivity during Jeremy Lin's improbable run in the NBA this year include insensitive signs during the games he played and the using of the derogatory word for Asians, "chink", when two ESPN employees used it for the phrase "chink in the armor".  These are the only few public examples but I have seen many more racist comments online also when Linsanity was much talked and blogged about.  So seeing racist comments in his own Facebook page does not surprise me at all. In fact the cynical or realist side of me expects it.

Again, below is the screen shot.  See for yourself the ugliness in action for a player that has shown nothing but class throughout the year.

Peter Shen: Jeremy, regarding the sample comments above, I cannot condone their words because they are beyond harsh. I mean almost everyone one of them accuses him of being beneath a human being. No matter how upset you are, that should never be acceptable. That said, I actually think the majority of Knicks fans are more upset at the Knicks organization and owner James Dolan than Lin based on the comments and polls I have seen. And I would say most basketball fans think the Knicks dropped the ball on this one, letting him go without receiving anything. Any rational person would have done what Jeremy did, which was sign the only contract given to him. All throughout this process NY told him to test the market without ever giving him a contract yet promising all throughout that they would match. Any person in his shoe would sign the contract because, 1, you sign the only one you have, 2, your employer said they will match, 3, your employer may change their mind, which they did. So I think it was a smart move by Jeremy from a financial perspective but also from a basketball perspective. The Knicks are an insane asylum where Lin would have not prospered whereas in Houston he is free to play his style of game, pick and rolls and being the main playmaker. So I think he'll do well given his situation.

Jeremy Blum: the racist comments are very ugly, but actually i'd say the majority of comments are from disappointed knicks fans who are angry that lin seems to be "turning his back" on NYC and becoming a player influenced by contracts. (which shouldn't surprise anyone, seeing as how professional basketball is a BUSINESS...but sports fans will be sports fans.)
